Storage

Tool storage for people who want to build, not curate a wall

The right storage system makes a tool available at the moment the project calls for it. That often means a mix of drawers, wall storage, cabinets, and machine-specific homes.

Daily-use tools stay close

Squares, pencils, tape measures, drills, drivers, and common hand tools deserve the shortest reach.

Machine accessories live together

Blades, wrenches, inserts, jigs, and setup tools are easier to find when they live with the machine they support.

Rare tools can move outward

Do not give prime wall or drawer space to tools used twice a year. Put them higher, deeper, or in labeled cases.

Keep the project moving

Build a home for the tools you reach for repeatedly

Start with the tools that interrupt work when they go missing. Measuring tapes, squares, pencils, marking tools, drill bits, drivers, and common hand tools deserve predictable homes. A simple holder close to the work can outperform a beautiful cabinet across the garage.

Use frequency as the first sorting rule

FrequencyPlacement
Every sessionWithin reach of the main bench or work zone
Every projectNearby cabinet, drawer, or wall storage
OccasionalHigher shelves or secondary storage
Machine specificAt or beside the machine when practical

Make returning a tool easier than abandoning it

Open holders work well for items used constantly. Drawers work well when small items need protection and labels. Cabinets reduce dust and visual clutter. Pick the storage style that makes cleanup obvious at the end of a session.
